A pay monthly deal is usually a monthly contract of a specified length, in which you pay the network for the cost of the phone and a allowance of data, minutes and texts.

Most mobile phone contracts are generally 24 months, but if you choose to purchase a deal with a lower period length then you should expect to pay a higher total amount for the phone.
